Part Three: Ron & HermioneI thought I would do something a little different with this article, and tackle two characters at one time. It is now confirmed by J.K. Rowling herself that Ron and Hermione will pair up romantically, so while giving some general details and information on their respective Zodiac signs, I will also delve into their astrological romantic compatibility. Their impending romance will have significance not only to themselves personally, but to the storyline as well. So let's see how they match up!
Ron: Pisces (February 20 - March 20)
Hermione: Virgo (August 23 - September 23)
First, let's get to know Ronald Bilius Weasley a little better. He was born on March 1 st , making him a Pisces.
Element: Water (Emotions, intuitions, imaginations, dreams, sensitivity)
Ruling Planet: Neptune
Quality: Mutable (Each Zodiac sign is assigned one of three qualities; Pisces is a mutable, meaning that people born under this sign are flexible, “roll with the punches“, and accept change more easily than others. Sometimes, people under mutable signs can be considered moody or emotional, as they themselves are prone to change.)
Animal: Fish (Specifically, two fish swimming in opposite directions)
Birthstone: Moonstone and sometimes, pearls. (This is the birthstone according to astrology, meaning it is associated with your planet moreso than the actual month you were born in. Sometimes they are referred to as “starstones” to avoid confusion.)
Colors: Sea-Foam Green, pale green, white, purple
Corresponding Tarot cards: The Moon and The Hanged Man
Pisceans sometimes seem to have a dual personality. At one moment, they can appear compassionate, empathetic, and kind…the next they seem insensitive, rude, and a little hot-headed or passionate. The fish that swim in opposite directions (the symbol of Pisces) is said to be representative of their tendency to shift moods easily. Under all that turmoil however, lies a very sensitive and imaginative person. Pisceans tend to create “tough outer shells” of personality to hide their highly sensitive, gentle, and emotional side. Often, this can lead to confusion within themselves; they concentrate so much on the lives and problems of others, that their own true feelings become cloudy, and hard to decipher, hidden as they are under said “shells. This is very typical of most water signs, water signs signifying strong emotions and intuition. Pisceans also tend to be more of the “follower” type than the “leader” type. They prefer to follow others' leads, most times due to fear of their own inadequacies (real or imagined), and sometimes due the fact that they just plain do not want the responsibility of leadership.
We can really apply this well to Ron's personality. When it comes to Harry and his feelings, Ron is very intuitive, and usually very supportive and loyal to Harry. Of course, as an insecure teenager, he has his bouts of jealousy; and it's hard to blame him, living as he does in the shadow of not only his very famous best friend, but also of his successful brothers. But in the end, Ron is always loyal, and he has shown his deep loyalty to his family, Harry, and Hermione, several times throughout the story thus far. While we know Ron can be totally crass and insensitive, even being described as “having all the emotional range of a teaspoon”, we also know that he is in fact, VERY sensitive. His outbursts, his silliness, and his hotheadedness are many times covers for the emotional turmoil he feels within himself. A perfect example of this, is the deplorable way he treats Hermione at the Yule Ball in Goblet of Fire . He doesn't treat her badly because he wants to be mean and nasty; he treats her badly because he cannot come to terms with his own feelings for her, his own hurt and shock of seeing her with another man, and as such, puts all his negative energy into hurting Hermione and insulting Viktor, therefore avoiding the truth of his own feelings. Yet, when Malfoy dares to insult Hermione (at various points in the series), Ron usually reacts very passionately…going so far as to physically threaten Draco, not to mention the infamous curse of “Eat Slugs, Malfoy!”. Ron, whether he wants to admit it or not, (usually not) is actually very in tune with the feelings of those around him. To compensate (or really, OVER compensate) for this excess of sensitivity, he comes across as a bit of an in sensitive jerk sometimes. It is a self preserving, subconscious measure to avoid his most passionate feelings. He cannot handle or sort out his romantic feelings for Hermione, his love/friendship/jealousy/loyalty relationship with Harry, or his feelings of love and inadequacy involving his family. Because he cannot sort them out, he avoids them altogether, or, as I stated above, overcompensates by “acting the fool“. It would also be prudent to mention here, that while this emotional turmoil is a Pisces trait, it also a very typically teenage trait. By the very end of Half-Blood Prince, we see Ron mature a little, having gone through the gauntlet of teenage crushes and love. By the end of that book, he finally seems to be “getting it” concerning Hermione. In the last book, we can expect Ron to have matured quite a bit. He will always retain his silliness, his imagination, and his over sensitivity, because that is who Ron is, but as he continues to mature, he will finally come to terms with, and face some of his most passionate emotions, most likely resulting in a stronger, more confident person. The key to maintaining emotional stability in Pisceans is staying calm. Once Ron can learn to stay calm, and let his instincts and intuition guide him, he will excel at whatever he puts his mind to, whether it be a relationship with Hermione or his Quidditch skills.
Another note of import is that Pisceans are one of the most intuitive signs of the Zodiac, meaning that they have a well defined “Inner Eye”, as Madame Trelawney would say. Many people have noticed throughout the series, that when Ron makes a joke or prediction, they often come true. Not always, but more times than not. Pisceans can also be very good tacticians, meaning they are good at solving problems, playing games, and creating plans. We see this trait in Ron several times, the most famous probably being the giant, McGonagall-created chess game that he plays to help Harry advance onward to the Philosopher's Stone. As a side note, this trait may also be very handy in finding Horcruxes. There was an editorial I read a long time ago, that suggested that Hermione is the brains behind the operation (figuring a problem out), Ron is the tactician (once it's figured out, how to go about actually achieving the goal) and Harry is the action man (he actually does it; he accomplishes the goal). I thought this opinion and insight rather brilliant, and it certainly fits with Ron's tactical skills.
Ron is a very good representative of his Zodiac sign; his intuitive, instinctual, gentle emotions and ability to empathize, are often clouded by his own issues of avoidance concerning his feelings and his self perceived inadequacies.
Now onto Hermione Granger, a Virgo born on September 19 th .
Element: Earth (practicality, reliability, intellectual, down-to-Earth, loyal, perfectionism)
Ruling Planet: Mercury
Quality: Mutable
Animal: Not an animal, but a woman, the Virgin. Interestingly, the only Zodiac sign represented with a female.
Birthstone: Sardony
Colors: Green, deep green, brown
Corresponding Tarot cards: The Hermit and the Magician
It seems that J.K. Rowling has certainly done some Astrology research, as this is a very fitting sign for Hermione. Her element, earth, suggests the kind of traits that Hermione is notorious for; her practicality, her solid dependability, and her intelligence. The sign Virgo, and it's corresponding element earth, also suggest a mothering attitude; sometimes Virgos can be labeled as nags. Though, even with this tendency to “mother” others, Virgos can come off as cold and distant; not because they are, but because they, like Pisceans, tend to hide their emotions often. Virgos strive for perfection in every task they take on; this leads them to put a lot of pressure on themselves, and naturally, such pressure nurtures worry, and worry in turn becomes fear of failure. Failure is perhaps a Virgo's greatest fear, and this is why they can sometimes come off as cold or indifferent---they are afraid to fail others and themselves. They, again like Pisceans, have issues worrying about their own self-perceived inadequacies; Virgos just tend to hide it better. Applying this to Hermione is easy; she seems to fit the Virgo sign to a “T”.
Remember her extreme worry about O.W.L. results. Here she is, often called “the brightest witch of her age” reduced to near hysterics over results she should be confident are great. Virgos are especially good at intellectual endeavors; and even when their talent is proved time and time again, they still live in a cloud of doubt. We can see through Hermione's character that she puts an overly high amount of pressure on herself to do well academically. Hermione's biggest fear is failure, as proved by her boggart (failing) and we see this as early as the first book when she prioritizes expulsion from Hogwarts as being worse than death. Ron was right; she “needs to sort out her priorities!”
Emotionally, I wouldn't say that Hermione is necessarily cold or distant, but she does take matters of the heart (as they apply to herself) very cautiously. When it concerns others, she becomes straightforward and matter-of-fact, as we see when she questions Harry about Cho in Order of the Phoenix . When it comes to herself though, love and relationships are scary; not only do they take away an element of control (important to a Virgo), but there is always a chance of failure and rejection. Love is not a book, or a test--- love is uncontrollable and unpredictable. To a practical, in control, perfectionist Virgo, this can be terrifying.
There is no doubt that Hermione is a great example of a Virgo. She really personifies the characteristics of this trait in almost everything she does. But sometimes, even practical, reliable Virgos can fly off the handle. This seems to happen after a period of intense repression, (not dealing with an issue), or when they have driven themselves crazy with worry about failing something specific. Maybe this is why we rarely see outbursts from Hermione, except when dealing with Ron. The situation with Ron is scary to Hermione, because she cannot control her feelings for him, and because she cannot control them, there must be some kind of climax concerning the issue, some closure. For that to happen, she must openly admit her feeling for him, and risk being rejected, either now or later. Rejection of course, equals failure in a Virgos' eyes. Just look at how practical, reliable Hermione conjured birds to wildly attack Ron---she is fighting a losing battle trying to keep her feelings under lock and key. She's losing her Virgoan composure!
Pisces + VirgoNow that we know Ron and Hermione's respective signs, let's take a look at just how romantically compatible they are according to Astrology.
Ever hear of the old saying that opposites attract? Well, Ron and Hermione are proof. Their Zodiac signs are polar opposites, meaning opposite but also complimentary. Think about the concept of the color wheel to understand. Black is opposite but complimentary to white. This works in the same way for the personality traits of Ron and Hermione. They each have the ability to bring to the relationship what the other needs, what the other lacks. This is what
www.astrologyzone.com had to say on the subject of a Pisces/Virgo pairing:
“
Your Pisces lover is all right-brain: full of dreams, imagination, and compassion for others. Pisces may not be common-sense realists -- that is your domain -- but they more than make up for it by understanding some of the mysterious things in life. They excel at reading symbols and gestures, while you are a literal creature. Where you are precise, they are diffuse; where you are rigid, they are flexible; where you see limits, they see endless horizons.”This fits Ron and Hermione's friendship well, and it bodes well for a romantic relationship. Ron should be able to bring Hermione out of her intellectual shell, helping and teaching her to have fun and be silly and spontaneous once in awhile. Hermione should be able to teach to Ron how to be more cautious, less hot-headed, and help him to think things through. Spontaneous creativity meets cool logic, in other words. According to astrology, they should be able to bring out the best in one another.
Of course, they are not completely opposite in every way; they both have a penchant for doubting themselves. Even in this, they can be beneficial to each other. Ron can be the one to build her self -esteem and lessen her doubts about failure. He has shown throughout the series, time and time again, that he thinks she is brilliant. His confidence in her will help her build confidence within herself. Hermione, with her frank and often blunt rationality, can easily point out to Ron that his problems come from a lack of self confidence, and nothing more.
In the last book, Ron and Hermione are expected to officially become a couple. This may cause some initial tension within the Trio, but will in the long run, be a great asset to the up and coming fight against Voldemort. When Ron and Hermione have finally acknowledged their feelings for each other, and that bottled up pressure is finally released, they will be free to work in “top form“; they will be free to shine. And according to astrology, they can help each other do that. With love, anything is possible.
